When people consider ‘the next step on the ladder’ the automatic response is to think of a course to go on, or to find a mentor. We wanted the conference to provoke thought much further outside the box. What other avenues, work-based or extra-curricular, could they consider? How much can an inspirational story actually inspire change?
2015 was also the year Bristol was European Green Capital so the team came along to talk delegates in the break about their green aspirations. In conjunction with this we also had card-only name badges, we recycled lanyards, produced generic signage so it could be used again, partnered with local companies and did away with goody bags. One of our sponsors was Ecosurety who were providing all attendees with a keep-cup – I still use mine to this day!
The programme has gone from strength to strength, with the 2018 conference receiving fantastic reviews – we reduced the programme by one speaker and increased the time allocated per speaker thereby relaxing the programme and reducing the speed of content.
There is always opportunities to change and refresh an event when many are regular attendees – it is vitally important that the format and experience doesn’t stale.
The whole content programme was broken down, key messages understood and stakeholders to the research project identified. Once the event definition was signed off a lot of time was invested in the agenda. The target audience was not fellow academics but local authorities, charities and organisations and the content needed to appeal to them to travel the distance to Bristol.

"Paola is the most organised, professional, competent events manager I have ever worked with; and with a career over 18 years in corporate communications I’ve worked with quite a few. She brings dedication, passion and commitment to the task and leaves nothing to chance. She was the right partner for our inaugural Spring Forward Conference in Bristol in 2018 and we are continuing to work together on next year’s conference and more. I do not hesitate to recommend her."
